Grant funding is currently available to organizations working to increase tourism in Federal Way.

The city is accepting applications for its Tourism Enhancement Grant. Approximately $45,000 is up for grabs in 2010. Spring quarter applications are due March 31. The funding is intended to attract visitors to Federal Way.

It can be used for a variety of tourism boosting activities. Both non-profits and state organizations that plan, sponsor or host eligible events in Federal Way may apply, according to a city press release. The money may be used to secure, market, promote or advertise happenings such as amateur sporting, arts or cultural events. It may also go toward membership meetings, training, conferences and other events that bring out-of-towners to Federal Way. There is no cap on individual grant requests.

Historically, the Tourism Enhancement Grant has supported national and community events alike. Last year, funding was directed to the Federal Way Symphony, Federal Way Chorale, USSSA Men’s Softball championship tournament, Federal Way Arts Commission, Centerstage Theatre and the sponsorship of the Junior National and U.S. Open Swimming Championship.

Bringing visitors to town is essential to the Federal Way’s financial stability. Guests tend to spend money on food, lodging and entertainment once they arrive in Federal Way. This generates tax revenues.

The average visitor staying overnight in Federal Way will conservatively spend $75, economic development director Patrick Doherty said. Each person coming for a day trip will spend about $40, he said.

The Tourism Enhancement Grant review committee will meet April 16 to review the applications. Applicants are strongly recommended to have a representative present to answer questions, said committee chairman H. David Kaplan. The meeting will take place at City Hall. More information will be sent to applicants prior to the meeting. The grant funding will be awarded by June.

A second chance to apply for funding will take place this September.
