On Tuesday, King County Executive Dow Constantine ordered an inquest into the shooting death of David Young, 23, who was fatally shot Aug. 31 when police attempted to perform a traffic stop because they suspected Young of driving a stolen vehicle.
According to Federal Way police, Young stopped the truck, but then aggressively drove it toward an officer as he approached the vehicle.
King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg recommended the inquest after his office reviewed investigative materials from the King County Sheriff’s Office. Inquests are fact-finding hearings held before a six-member jury. Inquests are called to determine the causes and circumstances of deaths involving on duty law enforcement officers of King County.
Inquests are not held as a means to determine civil or criminal liability. They are meant to provide the public insight on the case and law enforcement’s actions.
