Blue Poppy Day brings local arts to Rhody Garden

• Art blooms in Federal Way: Blue Poppy Day will be held 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 18 at the Rhododendron Species Botanical Garden on the Weyerhaeuser campus. Event includes garden tours and giveaways. The event will include musical performances from the Aria Dance Company, the Harmony Kings, the Federal Way Chorale, the Federal Way Youth Symphony, classical guitarist Leon Christian from the Federal Way Symphony, the Tacoma Performing Dance Company Tinkerbell Ferries and the Parnassus Project. Cost is $8 for adults, $5 for students with student ID, $5 for seniors (65 and over). Children 12 and under, garden members, Weyerhaeuser employees, and members of the military are admitted free. • Bonsai garden: An exhibit of paintings and drawings by the Northwest artist group “Trees in Art” will run through June 12 at the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection (weyerhaeuser.com/bonsai) on the Weyerhaeuser campus in Federal Way. Contact (253) 924-5206.

On May 18, the Advancing Leadership Class of 2013 is hosting Break The Chains, a 5K bike ride/walk/scoot at the Federal Way Commons to raise public awareness of human trafficking. • It’s Only Rock and Soul: Centerstage’s original musical tribute features seminal hits of the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. Attendees can bid via silent auction on drumheads signed by Pete Best, Mick Fleetwood and Hal Blaine. The show runs through May 26 at the Knutzen Family Theatre, 3200 SW Dash Point Road.
