Does the World Championship of Sand Sculpting belong in a parking lot? | Federal Way letters

When I first heard that Federal Way was considering having the World Championship of Sand Sculpting contest here, I was thrilled. We have made a few trips to Harrison Hot Springs in the past to see the sand sculptures there. While there, we also visited other interesting things in the area such as Minter Gardens and Bridal Falls.

I did wonder just where Federal Way would host such an undertaking when it was first talked about bringing it here. Now that I read it is going to take place at the old Target/Toys R’ Us site, I was shocked. And organizers feel it has outgrown the British Columbia spot. What are they thinking? They think that the Target/Toys R’ Us spot is better than Harrison Hot Springs? They have to be joking. If they had found a spot on a beach somewhere in our area, I might say “good for them.” But what does the Target/Toys R’ Us lot have to offer? At least Harrison Hot Springs had the hot springs hotel, the lake and mountain views and a beautiful setting.

I can’t believe they think this is an improvement. And how many sand sculptures do they think that site will hold?
