TRACKING THE GRADS: District baseball and softball players excelling in college

Nick Tanielu — The Federal Way High School grad is playing his redshirt freshman season for the Washington State Cougars as a third baseman.

Nick Tanielu — The Federal Way High School grad is playing his redshirt freshman season for the Washington State Cougars as a third baseman.

Tanielu is leading the Cougars in several offensive categories this season. He is hitting .424 with 11 doubles, three triples, two home runs and 19 RBIs. Tanielu has also scored 28 runs in 26 games.

The Cougars are 16-10 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-12 Conference. Tanielu has started all 26 games, which includes wins over 14th-ranked Arizona State and a win over No. 23 Stanford.

Matt Bower — The Beamer graduate is playing his freshman season at Washington State. The left-handed pitcher has made five appearances and thrown 3 2/3 innings. He has a 19.64 earned-run average and has struck out five.

Bower finished with a 6-3 record and an earned-run average under 1.00 his senior season at Beamer. Bower also threw four complete-game shutouts during the season, including a no-hitter against Curtis when he struck out 15.

Travis Crumb — The Beamer grad is playing his junior season at Jamestown College after playing two years at Tacoma Community College. Crumb is an outfielder. Crumb has played in one game and scored two runs for the 13-8 Jimmies.

Kenny Johnson — The Todd Beamer grad is playing infield at Linfield College in Oregon during his junior season.

The switch hitter has played in 14 games and is hitting .214 with five runs. Linfield is 20-4 on the season and the top-ranked NAIA team in the nation.

Jarett Hardy — The Thomas Jefferson grad is playing his senior season at Oklahoma Wesleyan after transferring from Pierce College. The first baseman is hitting .385 with 14 doubles, two triples and 19 RBIs. He has also scored 30 runs for the 20-14 team.

Derek Voigt — The TJ grad is playing at Peru State College in Nebraska as a senior. The infielder is hitting .313 with 11 runs, five doubles and 11 RBIs for the Bobcats. The team is 10-11 on the season.

Brian Corliss — The Beamer grad is playing his junior season at Lewis-Clark State in Idaho after transferring at Pierce College. Corlis, an infielder, is hitting .296 with 19 runs, five doubles, one triple, one home run and 19 RBIs. The Warriors are 27-8 on the season.

Several Federal Way school district players are also on community college rosters around Washington. Beamer graduate Mac Gridley is playing at Lower Columbia, Jefferson’s Mitch McQueen is playing at Tacoma, Beamer’s Richie Apigo is at Clark, Decatur’s Christian Meister is at Green River and Federal Way’s Grant Burpee is playing at Skagit Valley.

Pierce College has the most district graduates on its roster. The Raiders’ roster includes Federal Way grads Drew Cratsenberg, Elliot Morris, Austin Weber and Darrien Moran, along with Beamer’s Brett Oyer and Decatur’s Brett Johnson.

Softball

Hannah Kiyohara — The University of Louisville softball team are ranked 11th this season and have a 28-6 record. The Thomas Jefferson High School graduate is playing her junior season for the Cardinals.

Kiyohara is currently hitting .289 in 31 games this season with 12 runs, one double, one triple, one home run and 14 RBIs. She has started 29 games at numerous positions.

As a freshman, Kiyohara was named first-team, All-Big East Conference becoming the first true freshman in Louisville history to receive that honor. She hit .331 in 49 games and scored 19 runs with two doubles and 22 RBIs.

Christi Bruin — The 2010 Jefferson grad is playing her junior season at New York University-Poly in Brooklyn, NY. The Blue Jays are currently 9-4. Bruin is a catcher and infielder and is hitting .333 with two runs, four doubles, one triple and 12 RBIs, which leads the team.

Sarah Petosa — The 2010 Todd Beamer graduate is playing her junior season at Seattle University. The outfielder has played in all 32 of the Redhawks’ games this season and is hitting .212 with 15 runs, two doubles and two RBIs. She is also leading the team with 12 stolen bases. Seattle U is 13-21 on the season.

Taylor Winton — The 2010 Todd Beamer grad is currently playing her junior year at Marshall University in West Virginia. The catcher has played in 20 games this season, starting 14. Winton is hitting .152 with one home run and two RBIs for the Thundering Herd. Marshall is currently 23-12 overall and 9-3 in Conference USA play.

Erin Fujita — The 2009 Jefferson grad is playing her senior season at Hawaii Pacific University. Fujita is hitting .167 this season with 10 runs, a triple and one RBI. Hawaii Pacific is 15-11 on the season in NCAA Division II.

Allie Crowe — The Jefferson grad is playing her sophomore year at Western Washington. The infielder has played in 18 games, starting 12, and is hitting .229 with four runs, two doubles and three triples. Western is 16-14 on the season.

Emma Blauser — The Beamer grad is playing her freshman season at Western Washington. The infielder is hitting .167 in 11 games with four runs and a double.

Erin Slater — The Decatur grad is playing her sophomore season at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minn. The first baseman has started 16 games and is hitting .219 with seven runs, a double, triple and three RBIs. Macalester is 8-10 on the season.

Lexi Goranson — The Jefferson grad is playing her freshman season at Portland State. The outfielder has played in nine games and is hitting .200 with five runs. Portland State is 12-21 on the season.

Michaela Patton — The TJ grad is playing her freshman season at Savannah State University in Georgia. Patton, an infielder, is hitting .346 with 24 runs, eight doubles, two home runs and 15 RBIs. Savannah State is 17-14 on the season.
