Federal Way holiday gift bazaar moves to Commons mall food court

Upon strolling through The Commons mall over the weekend, one only needs to make their way to the food court to notice the holidays have arrived.

In its third year, the Winter Farmers Market and Holiday Gift Bazaar brings together 25 vendors who sell handcrafted gifts and decorations for this holiday season.

Organizer Rose Ehl said the bazaar is smaller this year, as their old locations — Borders and the space where Dicks Sporting Goods is — have new stores.

“This year we’re in the food court so we can only put in about three-quarters of the vendors,” Ehl said, noting they have about 25 committed vendors at this time but are looking for more.

The indoor market is from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday-Sunday and lasts until Dec. 21.

Ehl said vendors come and go throughout the season so the community can expect to see new products each weekend.

It’s Liz Teichert’s first year selling her soaps and other bath products at the market after starting Soap Aria in January.

Teichert, a Federal Way resident, sells all natural soaps with premium and signature soap bases. Some are “totally organic,” and have no dyes or detergents.

Teichert began making soaps when her daughter was 15 years old as part of their arts and crafts days. That was 21 years ago. As she became more skilled in her hobby, she decided to make it a business after recently retiring from the Air Force as a civilian.

“It’s the total opposite of what I was doing,” she said. “I just love being out there with the people.”

Teichert’s soaps sell for $6 at the market and $7 online. She also sells bath balms, essential oils and organic facial masks.

Federal Way resident Pat Fuller from Pat’s Creative Needle is also new to the market but has been crocheting for 40 years.

“As a young mom, we began with one child and added four more throughout the years, but I did that for fun in decorating the house,” she said about her pieces.

Fuller currently specializes in hand-knit and crocheted ruffled scarves, hats and friendship bracelets in Seahawks colors.

“The Seahawks [items] were a big draw this summer,” she said, noting she was a vendor at the summer farmers market as well.

Fuller will have Disney’s “Frozen” fleece blankets soon, and also sells Dove chocolate, Pampered Chef and Mary Kay.

“It’s a fun thing to do and a fun way to meet other people,” she said. “That’s part of the reason I do it, the outreach to the community.”

Fuller will be at the indoor market through the rest of the season on Fridays and Saturdays.

Ehl said she expects Des Moines-based Freedom Snacks to come to the market as well. Freedom Snacks sells different flavors of gourmet popcorn and offers packaged gifts, too, perfect for the holidays.

“It’s a very friendly shopping atmosphere,” Ehl said, adding that each weekend there’s a coloring contest in which the winner is awarded a $10 gift certificate.

Ehl hopes to have live music in the future and is working with the mall to lower their food court music during the market’s hours of operation. She’s also looking forward to the possibility of having the library host a story telling for children.

The market sells jewelry, Christmas decorations, gloves, oils and other products, among the scarves, soaps and blankets.
