There weren’t too many upsets during last weekend’s South Puget Sound League wrestling tournaments.

The Kentwood Conquerors easily cruised to the SPSL North team title at Kent-Meridian High School and Rogers won the South Division team title at Rogers. Both teams were also unbeaten during the dual-meet season.

That was also the case for four Federal Way School District wrestlers who won individual division championships Saturday. Decatur’s Spencer Kabalac and Tevyn Tillman, Federal Way’s Jon Detzler and Beamer’s Trevor Mills all entered their respective weight classes as the favorites, and they didn’t disappoint.

Also not disappointing was Beamer’s Tyler Enos. The junior entered the SPSL South Tournament as the underdog at 135 pounds behind Rogers’ Jared Sterling. But Enos got the best of Sterling in the championship match, winning a 6-5 decision. Sterling finished second at last year’s Mat Classic state wrestling tournament at 130 pounds and beat Enos during the regular season.

Kabalac rolled through the 145-pound bracket and beat Kentlake’s Jason Bandy in the championship match, 9-5. The senior’s toughest match came in the quarterfinals, when he outpointed Tahoma’ John Buban, 6-5.

Tillman’s SPSL North title was a little bittersweet for the fans at Kent-Meridian. The Decatur 285-pounder never got to wrestle a much-anticipated match with Kentridge’s Le’Roi Edwards in the championship. The two wrestlers have split a pair of matches this season and came in as the top-two seeds in the tournament. But Edwards injury-defaulted the final match.

Tillman, the top seed, wrestled only two matches at Kent-Meridian. He pinned Jefferson’s Jon Combs in 32 seconds in the quarterfinals and pinned Austin Haggin in the semifinals in just 55 seconds.

Tillman, a junior, placed fifth at the state championships at 285 as a sophomore last year.

Detzler won a pair of one-point decisions to claim the 215-pound championship. The Federal Way senior beat Kentwood’s Nathan Herrick in the quarterfinals, 5-4, before pinning TJ’s Rayn Kikuchi in the semifinals. Detzler then beat Kentwood senior Sean Staaleson in the title match, 11-10.

Mills, a junior, had a pretty simple time rolling to the SPSL South’s 130-pound championship. Mills won his first two matches by a combined score of 30-1 and then got by Rogers’ Tielor Isaac in the semifinals, 7-2. The win set up a championship match with teammate Corey Obungen, who Mills beat 10-2.

Other district qualifiers include Decatur’s Rad Krysa (fourth at 103 pounds), TJ’s Ivan Mukomal (second, 119), Decatur’s Greg Bull (fourth, 135) and Eric Moerhle (third, 140), Federal Way’s Jacob Conklin (second, 152), TJ’s Paul Johnson (third, 152), Decatur’s Darren Faber (third, 189) and TJ’s Zach Roth (fourth, 189).

Next up for the wrestlers from the North Division is the Class 4A Region II Tournament at Inglemoor High School on Saturday. Beamer wrestlers will travel to Foss High School for the Region III Tournament. The top-four finishers in each weight class advance to the Mat Classic state tournament, Feb. 15-16 inside the Tacoma Dome.

Gymnastics

Cassie Peterson and Kaylyn Borden helped the Todd Beamer Titans finish second at Saturday’s South Puget Sound League Gymnastics Championships at Kentwood High School.

Peterson finished second in the all-around competition and Borden was right behind in third place. Puyallup’s Katie Bubnich won the all around with 37.150. Peterson tallied 36.725 and Borden ended up with 36.125 points, as well as the individual title on the balance beam with a 9.4. Borden also finished third on the vault (9.0) and second on the floor exercise (9.575). Peterson, a freshman, finished second on the vault (9.150) and third on the balance beam (9.250).

The Titans also finished second behind Puyallup in the team standings. Beamer tallied 170 total points and Puyallup finished with 175. Jefferson tied with Emerald Ridge for fourth place with 165 points, Federal Way was 13th and Decatur finished 14th.

The Class 4A West Central District Gymnastics Championships will be Saturday at Auburn Mountainview High School.

Swimming

Beamer’s Tommy Fraychineaud is officially the best diver in the West Central District. Fraychineaud won the district championship last weekend with an automatic state-qualifying score of 376.05. Teammate Ludomir Wanot finished up second with 312.40.

In the pool, Decatur got a second-place finish from Tom Cunningham in the 100-yard freestyle (47.91) and Robert Sobus in the 500 free (5:02.28). The Gator 200 freestyle relay team also finished second Saturday at the West Central District Swimming and Diving Meet at Rogers High School. The team of Cunningham, Zack Klein, Tanner Brotherton and Sobus ended up behind Curtis in a time of 1:33.94.

The Federal Way school district also got third-place finishes from Beamer’s Kyle Christensen in the 200 individual medley (2:07.52) and Federal Way’s Cameron Moak in the 50 free (22.28) and 100 free (48.95).

Curtis won the district team championship with 198 points, followed by Gig Harbor (180) and Mount Tahoma (132). Decatur finished sixth and Federal Way and Beamer tied for seventh.

Next up for the swimmers and divers is the Class 4A State Championships Feb. 15-16 at the King County Aquatic Center.
