The opening of the South Puget Sound League boys soccer regular season wasn’t too kind to the two defending division champions. Both Federal Way and Beamer lost their SPSL openers Tuesday night after rolling to unbeaten records during league play a season ago.

The Eagles, who finished second at the Class 4A tournament a season ago, were shutout by the Kentwood Conquerors, 2-0, and Beamer was upended by Curtis, 2-1.

Federal Way rolled to the SPSL North Division title last season with a 10-0-4 record, but couldn’t get anything going Tuesday against Kentwood, who improved to 3-0-0 overall on the year. The loss dropped the Eagles to 1-2-0.

The only goal of the first half came from Michael Fuller on a pass from Danny Brill in the 29th minute to make it 1-0, which is how it stayed until late in the game.

Kentwood’s Luke Angevine put the game out of reach in the 72nd minute on a pass from Dillon Heist. Mitch Pombrio picked up the shutout in goal for the Conquerors.

Beamer, who has won the last two SPSL South Division titles, also couldn’t get anything going Tuesday in their league opener against Curtis. The Vikings tallied the first two goals of the game on shots from Scott Panitz and Patrick Aravena.

Talented Titan freshman Troy Peterson scored a late goal in the 89th minute. The loss dropped Beamer to 1-2-0 on the season.

Jefferson and Decatur both picked up win in their openers Tuesday. The Raiders downed Kentridge, 2-1, and the Gators shut out Kent-Meridian, 4-0.

Jefferson (1-1-1) rolled out to a 2-0 lead on goals from Derek Moore and Ernan Roman. Moore’s goal came in the 26th minute and Roman scored 16 minutes into the second half. Kentridge’s goal came in the 79th minute.

Decatur picked up a pair of goals from senior forward Kevin Day and single goals from Austin Nuss and Spencer Nakashima.

Baseball

After a five-day trip to Arizona, the TJ (4-2) baseball team returned home and downed Rogers in a non-leaguer Wednesday, 8-4. The Raiders, who finished 2-2 during their trip to Arizona, scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 4-2 Rogers’ lead.

The big hit during the inning was a two-run home run by Spencer LeCompte, who finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jarett Hardy was also 3-for-4 and Michael Sigafoos was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Jordan Beers picked up the win on the mound after six innings of work.

Beamer (1-2) junior pitcher Brian Corliss threw a complete game during a 3-2 win over Decatur (1-2) Wednesday. Corliss allowed seven hits, struck out six and walked just one. Beamer got two RBIs from Sean Goforth.

Fastpitch

Jefferson put up 11 runs in the top of the third inning on their way to a 21-0 win over Federal Way Tuesday. The Raiders pounded out 17 hits and took advantage of 14 Eagle errors in the five-inning game. Jayme Carbon had a double, triple, five RBIs and scored two runs and Erin Fujita finished 4-for-4 with four runs. Jessica Dickson picked up the win on the mound.

Decatur (1-1) senior Kendal Nakashima finished 4-for-4 with three triples and three RBIs during an 8-7 loss to Emerald Ridge Tuesday.
