Todd Beamer High School’s Shane Clare saved his best individual performance for last.
The senior cruised to a victory in the 200-yard individual medley Saturday night inside the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way at the Class 4A State Swimming and Diving Championships.
Clare’s swim, along with an anticipated state title by junior Bart Wanot in the 100 backstroke, helped the Titans finish in fourth place in the team standings, the highest ever for the school. Shorewood won the state title with 194 points, followed by Gig Harbor (179) and Inglemoor (173). Beamer finished with 171 points.
Clare swam the race of his life in the 200 individual medley final. The Beamer senior cut nearly a second and a half off his preliminary time during Saturday night.
Clare qualified fourth during Friday’s preliminary rounds with a 1:57.85. Richland’s Tyler Pickett (1:57.40) was the top qualifier and was followed by Garfield’s Andrew Nemeth (1:57.48) and Stanwood’s Matt Roe (1:57.73).
But the final was a different story. Clare dominated the field from start in the four-stroke race.
The senior swam the fastest butterfly and backstroke legs in the eight-man field to take a nearly 1 second lead over Nemeth entering the breaststroke leg, the weakest of the four strokes for Clare.
The breaststroke is where Nemeth excels and the Garfield junior pulled to nearly a dead heat with Clare entering the fourth and final freestyle leg. And that’s where Clare turned on the jets, swimming the last 50 yards in 26.87, compared to Nemeth’s 28.33. Shorewood’s Thor Stenfjord actually moved in front of Nemeth to claim the silver medal in the race.
Wanot’s state title in the 100 backstroke was more than expected. The junior had the fastest time in the state for the entire season and was on a quest to set a Washington record inside the Aquatic Center.
The state record (48.59) was set by Wilson’s Evan Martinec at the 2000 state meet. But Wanot finished Saturday night’s final in an automatic All-American time of 50.96. Snohomish junior Bryan Harvey was second in 51.80.
This was Wanot’s first season on the Titan swim team. During his first two years of high school, Wanot concentrated on swimming with him club team, King Aquatic.
Wanot was also hoping to win another individual state title Saturday, but came up short in the 50 free. He finished in second place behind Snohomish’s Garren Reichel after having the fastest qualifying time. Reichel ended up with a 20.91 in the final, compared to Wanot’s 21.22.
Clare and Wanot also helped the Titans score points in a pair of relays. Beamer finished second in the 200 medley relay in a time of 1:38.97 and fourth in the 400 free relay (3:17.62). The medley relay team also included Cole Um and Jade Feigert and the free relay team was made up of Wanot, Dylan Chase, Costner McKenzie and Clare.
Ludomir Wanot also had a solid state tournament weekend in Federal Way. The Beamer senior finished up in third place in the 1-meter diving competition with 361.70 points. Shorewood sophomore Eddie Young won the event with 404.50.
State notes:
• Decatur’s Tanner Brotherton finished 11th in the 50 free in a time of 22.40 and fellow Gator Noah Johnson was 17th in 22.76.
• Beamer’s Cole Um was 10th in the 100 butterfly in a time of 55.20 and ninth in the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.31.
• Thomas Jefferson junior Jordan Gaspay was 15th in the breaststroke in 1:02.92 and Beamer’s Jade Feigert was 23rd in 1:03.67.
