t Kiwanis will host event at Steel Lake Park for 52nd time
It should be bright and sunny on Friday for the Federal Way Kiwanis annual Salmon Bake at Steel Lake Park.
The National Weather Service forecasts 80 degrees in the Seattle area on July 25.
The salmon bake will include salmon dinners and hot dogs for children. The event will take place near the Steel Lake waterfront and the children’s big toy.
“We’re very kid-friendly,” said past Kiwanis president Bob Kellogg. “We don’t have anything specific for them, but the park provides that type of environment for them.”
The event will also feature informational booths from local volunteer organizations and live music. Thirty-five items will be raffled, including camping gear and a wine-chiller filled with a bottle of wine donated from each Kiwanis member.
All proceeds from the dinner and raffle will benefit local charities for children. Some of the Kiwanis biggest contributions are to several college scholarships for Federal Way students, as well as diapers and formula for the Multi-Service Center.
The Salmon Bake, in it’s 52nd year, is longest-running annual event that occurs in Federal Way. Kellog said he anticipates raising about $5,000 this year.
“With the cost of salmon and corn this year, it’s going to be a factor in what we raise,” he said.
The main focus of the event isn’t raising money, Kellog said. It’s hosting a community gathering and having a good time.
“We want to make a profit but that is not the primary goal,” he said. “It’s a special event that everybody loves to come to. We have a lot of old-timers. It’s an opportunity in the summertime to get together and talk.”
The Federal Way Kiwanis annual Salmon Bake will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. July 25 at Steel Lake Park, 2410 S. 312th St.
