In December, we asked for submissions from the public to join The Mirror’s editorial board.
This year, we have two expiring seats that opened due to term limits. Leaving the board are Joann Piquette, a retired community advocate, and Bob Dockstader, a retired attorney. They have both contributed to important community dialogue and we thank them for their service.
During the submission process, there were a number of community advocates who applied. This number was narrowed down to five, and these five met with the board for additional questions and comments. In February, the board selected the two finalists. These new members will serve two-year terms, beginning March 4, 2014.
The newest board members are Karen Brugato and Patrick Godfrey.
Originally from Portland, Ore., Brugato has lived in Federal Way for more than 20 years. She obtained an MBA in finance from San Diego State University. After years in hospital administration in San Diego, she retired and returned home to the Pacific Northwest.
Brugato’s volunteer work began in PTA, the P.E.O. Sisterhood and the Federal Way Chorale. Now that her kids have grown, her volunteer work also includes board membership in the Federal Way Chorale, the Federal Way Coalition for the Performing Arts, Kiwanis of Federal Way, Community in Schools mentor, Advancing Leadership Class of 2013, with continuing work with the Federal Way Coalition Against Trafficking and attending functions given by Reach Out, the Multi-Service Center, and Centerstage.
Godfrey served in national and state politics in various capacities for 35 years, 19 of which were as senior staff coordinator for the Washington State Senate Republican Leadership (1982-2001). He was appointed to the King County Alcohol and Substance Abuse Administrative Board by King County Councilman Peter von Reichbauer and currently serves as its chairman.
Godfrey is also an alternate delegate to the Mental Illness and Drug Dependency Task Force of King County). His personal passion is working to help people recover from the devastating effects of substance abuse. He was also a Tahitian drummer and dancer in Honolulu with the famous Puka Puka Otea dance troupe.
Godfrey enjoys boating, fishing, home maintenance and traveling with his wife, Margery.
In March 2011, the Mirror formed the editorial board with the purpose of bringing together community members of the greater Federal Way area to address important issues.
The board has written a number of editorials, discussed hot topics, endorsed campaigns and addressed specific referendums.
The board consists of five community members along with the editor and publisher of The Mirror.
