All Federal Way residents who own and occupy their home, along with small business or rental property owners located in Federal Way, may qualify for weatherization improvements or energy-saving retrofits in their home or business. The offer was previously available only to the city’s northwest quadrant.
The energy-efficiency work is part of a partnership between Federal Way and SustainableWorks. A total of 300 homes or businesses in Federal Way will benefit from the partnership.
The deadline to sign up for the program is May 27.
The assistance will come in various forms and will be provided at low cost. The project will create jobs, reduce the city’s carbon footprint and help individuals reduce their energy costs.
The undertaking includes energy audits, weatherization and retrofits. SustainableWorks, a nonprofit partner with Sound Alliance, received federal stimulus money. It plans to complete energy audits on eligible homes and businesses.
An audit identifies ways a home or business can decrease energy use and save money. Energy-saving light bulbs, shower heads and faucet aerators will be installed as part of the audit, according to Sound Alliance. The audit costs $95 and is fully refundable if SustainableWorks is not able to recommend ways to decrease energy use.
Once the audit is complete, homeowners or business owners will choose retrofits. Replacing aluminum windows, weatherizing drafty doors and repairing or replacing inefficient heating systems or water tanks are all common ways to reduce energy use and costs.
