Track and field: Federal Way relay teams dominate at SPSL championships

The Federal Way High School relay teams are going to be tough to beat this year.

The team of Ezekiel McNeal, Trenton Pinson, Robert Shelby and Maurice McNeal ran a pair of state-best times Friday to win both the 4×100 and 4×400 relays at the South Puget Sound League Track and Field Champioships at French Field in Kent. The foursome’s time of 3:20.11 was a meet record.

Next up for the Eagles’ two relay teams is the West Central 4A District meet, which will run Friday and Saturday at Mount Tahoma High School.

Shelby and Maurice McNeal also snared an individual title Friday in Kent. Shelby ran a state-best 37.41 to win his heat of the 300 hurdles, cutting more than a second off his previous personal best of 38.79. He also finished second in the 110 hurdles (14.58). McNeal won the 400 meters in a time of 49.14 to edge his freshman brother, Ezekiel, who finished second in 49.69.

Pinson ran the second-fastest time in the 100 meters with a blazing 10.87. Spanaway Lake’s Anthony Rathbun ran a 10.83. Jefferson’s Aaron Jeong finished third in 11.12.

Thomas Jefferson’s Kayla Adams was the star on the girls side for the Raiders. Adams, who won the shot put during the first day of competition on Wednesday, added the discus with a personal-best throw of 128-0. Adams is the defending state champion in the shot.

Federal Way freshman Majerae Gates was also impressive on the girls’ side Friday. Gates ran a blazing 12.18 in the 100-meter dash to beat Kentwood’s Holly DeHart (12.27).

Gates also anchored the Eagles’ to a first-place finish in the 4×100 relay. Gates, along with Bianca Arizpe, Jaleecia Roland and Dyesha Belhumeur ran the fastest time in the event (49.29).

Federal Way’s Jasmine Johnson added the 800 championship in a time of 2:16.41, edging Bethel’s Jordan McCann (2:18.47) and Beamer’s Taylor Kartes (2:19.63).
