Federal Way schools get piece of project’s $40 million grant

The Road Map Project (RMP), a group of seven area school districts aimed at improving student achievement, was awarded a $40 million grant from the U.S Department of Education’s “Race to the Top” competition.

Among the districts included in the RMP are Federal Way, Auburn, Highline, Kent, Renton and Tukwila.

According to the Puget Sound Education District, the group’s grant application was one of 16 winners selected nationally. The RMP was one of two applicants to receive the maximum grant amount of $40 million.

“This is a proud and historic moment,” Federal Way Public Schools Superintendent Rob Neu said. “This award is a reflection of the outstanding comprehensive and collaborative work that our districts are doing.”

Washington Sen. Patty Murray said this grant award is a big win for the students and families in South King County.

“This is a major victory for students and families in South King County,” Murray said in a news release. “When we level the playing field by providing increased access and opportunity to our students, everyone wins. This victory will have a long-lasting impact on our community, and our state, as we all work together to build a brighter future for our students.”

The money will be used to serve over 261 schools, and 150,000 students. Of those 150,000 students, 36,000 are considered high-need, the PSED notes.

The consortium will use the four-year grant to implement plans that help students “Start Strong,” be “STEM Strong” and “Stay Strong.”

Start Strong covers early childhood learning and development, while STEM Strong covers increasing student access and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math fields. Stay Strong is aimed at covering early access opportunities to the PSAT and SAT, increase the effectiveness of school counselors, and open access to advanced classes, such as Advanced Placement classes.

“This amazing accomplishment proves that great things can happen when we work together,” said Puget Sound Education District Superintendent John Welch.
