May Day protesters caused thousands of dollars worth of damage Tuesday in downtown Seattle (SEE PHOTOS BY THE FEDERAL WAY MIRROR).

May Day, also known as International Workers’ Day, is celebrated in countries around the world. The anti-capitalism rallies call for higher wages and more jobs, and are fueled by the Occupy Wall Street movement that has spread to cities nationwide.

Windows were broken at several businesses, including multiple banks, by protesters dressed in black. Police pepper-sprayed several protesters. Other participants gathered peacefully at downtown Westlake Plaza.

Several vehicles were also damaged along Seneca Street, Fourth Avenue and Sixth Avenue. Police closed Pine Street between Fourth and Sixth avenues, according to seattlepi.com. Police are prepared for more violence and activity by protesters this afternoon and evening.
