Panther Lake Elementary collects cash for families of Lakewood police officers

The old water jug at Panther Lake Elementary School is getting mighty full.

Principal Tom Capp put out the old Calligan water jug at the front of the school as a place for students to donate to the families of the fallen Lakewood police officers.

“Children have to be taught it’s not all about what they receive,” Capp said. “It’s about helping.”

The response has been “unbelievable,” Capp said.

“How people have been so generous,” he said. “It warms your heart.”

Students have been bringing in their loose change and their piggy banks. Some parents have been sending in larger donations — there are plenty of 20s and larger bills in there. One kindergartner brought in $100 last week. A grandma brought in money so that each kindergartner in the school could put in a few dollars.

At a concert last week, the jug was brought out and it continued to fill.

Capp estimates that by Dec. 11, they will have about $1,200 to present to the families. They hope to present it before the holiday break.

“It comes from the heart of giving,” Capp said.
