On April 9, the Federal Way Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) honored 10 high school juniors for their outstanding achievement in science, math and technology. The young women are Christy Kang and Victoria Zellerhoff, Decatur High School; Vanessa Delatorrie and Rebecca Gorrie, Federal Way High School; Leticia Fischer and Julie Yun, Thomas Jefferson High School; Hayoung (Amy) Lee and Justine Cynthia Weiler, Todd Beamer High School; and Heather Collier and Catherine A. Bell, Truman High School.
This annual event honors young women and encourages them to pursue higher education and careers in these fields. Keynote speakers Dr. Glorianne Walker and Dr. Rebecca Piha spoke of their education and experiences as dentists in Fife. They put special emphasis on education in science, math, and technology as doorways into a variety of career opportunities.
In addition to their achievements as students, the young women honored at this event contributed to their schools and the community in many ways. They are student government officers, athletes, musicians, artists and volunteers in faith-based organizations.
