(RE: “Let’s build a shooting arts center,” Dec. 4): As a cost conscious citizen in this challenging economy, there is one thing that I don’t skimp on — range time. I try to go to various shooting ranges at least once a month for recreation and to hone my skills. I would go more often if a quality range were nearby.

My family has lived in this city for five years and has never been to a play. It is just not our cup of tea and probably not for many others. I don’t anticipate going if a performing arts center is built, but I would not hesitate to spend $50 to $100 a month at a “shooting arts center.” A combined law enforcement/civilian shooting center would not only draw local enthusiasts, but those of surrounding communities as well. This center could provide current owners, new owners or the interested, introductory or advanced classes as well as competitive events. Our police department would have a training facility nearby and one that can also be utilized by other law enforcement agencies. There are many empty buildings in the city to choose from that can be converted into a shooting arts center. It would only cost a fraction of the price of the proposed performing arts center.

I’m willing to bet that if one was built, it would be a moneymaker. Thanks, Mark Knapp, for a wish that I hope someday comes true.
